Day 2 In the morning you will take our 2 hour in-house sea safety course and conduct a beach and your first Malay language lesson. Lunch at 12.30pm. After lunch listen to a turtle talk and conduct the turtle drill. You will be set a small task to learn about sea turtles which you will present the following day. Conduct evening routine. After dinner start your first turtle watch duties (8pm til 3am then 3am til 8am). (B, L, D)
- Collect coral bleaching data.
Day 3 SIn the morning present your turtle presentation to the rest of the group – it could be a song, quiz, story or a play. The important thing is that you and the other volunteers learn. Lunch is followed by a fish ID talk and then you conduct a fish id practice survey. Once the survey has finished 1 group will be set a small task relating to fish ID. Evening dinner is followed by volunteers talking to the new guests about sea turtles. Turtle watch duties at night (B. L, D).
Day 4- 5 Similar to Wednesday but present your relevant tasks in the morning at 11am followed by Malay Language lessons. On Thursday, day 4, you will go on a snorkel tour putting your fish ID and coral knowledge to good use. After lunch learn about the coral reef or the forest followed by relevant task. Evening dinner is followed by volunteers talking to the new guests about sea turtles. Turtle watch duties at night (B. L, D).
Day 6 Follow normal morning routine presenting your relevant task to the group in the morning. The weekends are the busy period for the resort so this will be your chance to interact with the guest more. You may be asked to help with leading water confidence sessions, leading forest walks or organizing games for the children. In the evening the turtle talk is often followed by the showing of a marine documentary for example Sharkwater. Turtle watch duties at night (B. L, D).
Day 7 (Sunday) For 1 week volunteers say a fond farewell to the island and take a midday transfer to the mainland. The other volunteers take a much needed day off before they start the ‘give back’ week. Turtle watch duties at night (B, L, D)
Day 8 (Monday) Take an early morning boat to the village followed by a village tour. Have lunch with the co-ordinators before a program brief where you will be given your food allowance for the day. Azimi our community liasion officer will go through the Turtles Need Trees Club and ask for your input for the upcoming club session. Head back to Bubbles in the early evening and then prepare for turtle talk and turtle watch as per normal (B, L, D).
Day 9 & 10 Back at Bubbles you will conduct official coral, fish and a forest survey (either mammals, insects or birds). You will also be expected to prepare for the TnT club and help out with the daily routine and turtle watch duties. You will be asked to help with any snorkel tours or forest walks during this time. (B, L, D)
Day 11 Take an early morning boat to the village and settle into your accommodation. Finish the TnT club content. In the evening you will go to a local house to have a traditional Malay sit down dinner in one of the villagers houses. Sleep in the village. (B, L, D).
