Rubbish Reused
We are living in a world of rubbish with nothing to do with it. You may be able to send your rubbish to a recycle centre but how much of
Crocheted sea creatures made from plastic bags
it actually gets recycled? But the major problems lie in the developing countries who often have no recycling schemes.
Rubbish Reused is an initiative of Ecoteer where the rubbish in Perhentian is reused and sold. The project is at the first stage of creating marketable items but the technology is there and very simple. The major types of rubbish are cigarette butts, plastic (bags and wrappers), food waste, bottles and cans and all these items pose a serious threat to turtles and other marine life. In the rubbish reused project all these types of rubbish produce a source of income.
Cigarette butts – dissolved and formed into useful plastic items
Thin plastic – either fused to make products like bags or into string and crochet into souvenirs
Fruit peel – using the process of garbage enzyme the peel is turned into a multipurpose biodegradable cleaner
Other food waste – composted and used for fruit and vegetable garden
Cans – crushed and sold to local metal collector
Plastic bottle – crushed and sold to local collector
The project aims to introduce these skills to the villagers who make money out of rubbish and they will collect the rubbish from the beaches and resorts reducing the amount of rubbish in the environment.
This project needs funding for website, skilled staff and equipment for up scaling the process for the villagers.
