Society status

HOPE has already been approved by various governmental departments of Malaysia.  HOPE has been temporary accepted as a fully registered Malaysian society however final acceptance is only after the certificate has been issued.  We are expecting to receive the certificate in October 2010.

Achievements in 2010

  • Eliminated poaching at a nesting beach in Perhentian;
  • Encouraged the local egg collectors working for the Department of Fisheries to use polystyrene boxes to transport turtle eggs to the government hatchery – increasing turtle hatchling success rates;
  • Educated the primary school children of Perhentian during our fortnightly Turtles need Trees Clubs;
  • Conducted the first 200km turtle track survey in Terengganu in the Walk for Turtles event – assisting the Department of Fisheries and other related organizations to improve estimates for the sea turtle nesting population in Terengganu;
  • Conducted awareness events at shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur, KLCC Aquarium and at several universities and colleges;
  • Over 3,500 facebook fans which we regularly update and educate about sea turtle conservation and topics;

What we plan for 2011

  • Protect a second turtle nesting beach in Perhentian and collecting relevant data;
  • Inject RM100,000 into the village economy through our Perhentian volunteer program –demonstrating to the villagers in Perhentian that they can make money directly from a healthy sea turtle population;
  • Introduce a fortnightly English club for the Primary school children in Perhentian;
  • Expand the Turtles need Trees club to the primary school at Kamping Mangkok on the mainland;
  • Conduct a turtle track survey between Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Besut 4 times.  Helping WWF in their turtle conservation project in the Setiu Wetlands;
  • Conduct a turtle track survey the entire length of the State of Terengganu a distance of 300km- raising significant awareness at the same time as collecting vital turtle population data;
  • Increase awareness amongst tourists throughout the Perhentian islands and at work places and universities in Malaysia;
  • 10,000 facebook fans which we regularly educate about sea turtle conservation and topics
